Canada has developed 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, providing guidance on the optimal amount of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep – and the best combination of these behaviours – for Canadians of all ages.
Guidelines were already available for Early Years (0-4y) and Children & Youth (5-17y) and these new guidelines round out the set. Guidelines for Adults and Seniors have recently been released.
Developed in partnership with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, Public Health Agency of Canada, Queen’s University and ParticipACTION, these guidelines integrate recommendations for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep. This is the first time there are recommendations on various types of physical activity woven together with guidance on sedentary and sleep behaviours.
The guidelines focus on three core recommendations: move more, reduce sedentary time and sleep well. Recommendations include adding movement of various intensities throughout the day, limiting recreational screen time, and aiming for 7-8 hours of sleep for those 65 and over.
The new resources are publicly available on the CSEP website here;
